What is HUID?
HUID stands for Hallmark Unique Identification — a 6-digit alphanumeric code assigned to each piece of hallmarked jewellery. It is printed on the hallmark stamp along with the BIS logo and purity grade.
From 1st April 2023, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) made it mandatory that all gold jewellery sold in India must carry HUID hallmarking. This applies to all jewellers registered with BIS across India.
Why Was HUID Introduced?
Before HUID, hallmarking only verified the purity of gold but didn't uniquely identify each piece. HUID solves this by:
- Giving every individual jewellery piece a unique identity
- Allowing consumers and authorities to verify authenticity easily via the BIS Care App
- Preventing fraud and duplication in the market
- Creating a digital trail for every hallmarked piece
Which Jewellery Requires HUID?
Currently, HUID is mandatory for gold jewellery and artefacts of 14, 18, and 22 carat. Silver and other metals are currently not under mandatory HUID hallmarking but are expected to be included in future phases.
What Are the Penalties for Non-Compliance?
Jewellers found selling non-HUID hallmarked gold jewellery can face:
- Fines up to Rs. 1 lakh or five times the value of the jewellery (whichever is higher)
- Cancellation of BIS licence
- Legal action under the BIS Act, 2016
How to Get HUID Hallmarking Done?
- Register your business with BIS if not already done
- Take your gold jewellery to a BIS-recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centre (AHC)
- The AHC will test purity, assign a HUID code, and stamp the jewellery
- The HUID is also uploaded to the BIS portal for traceability
Tips for Jewellers
- Do not purchase or sell old stock that lacks HUID — get it hallmarked first
- Train your staff to explain HUID to customers — it builds trust and credibility
- Use HUID compliance as a marketing advantage over unorganised competitors
- Keep a record of HUID numbers for your inventory management
Conclusion
HUID hallmarking is not just a legal requirement — it's an opportunity for jewellers to build trust with modern, informed consumers. Embrace compliance, and use it to differentiate your business in an increasingly competitive market.
